Webdunia.com, India's first multi-language Internet portal, has been awarded the Aksharam Information Technology Award at the concluding session of the 6th International Hindi conference. Organised in collaboration with the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Sahitya Academy and Uttar Pradesh Language Institute, the conference attracted over 400 Hindi language academics, linguists, writers, poets and editors.
The award was presented to Webdunia President and Chief Operating Officer Mr. Pankaj Jain for Webdunia's singular contribution to the development of Indian languages, especially Hindi among Indians on the world wide web and other platforms.
Talking about Webdunia's aspiration of becoming the country's largest portal, Mr. Pankaj Jain said that, "Webdunia dedicates this award to its million of users. Webdunia will continue to launch new initiatives to meet the emerging needs of the Indian language loving netizens."
In a session on "Hindi and Information Technology" organized as part of the 3-day world congress, Webdunia's Chief Content Officer Mr. Jaideep Karnik said Webdunia has achieved a major technology breakthrough by migrating to Unicode. As a result all 9 portals are accessible on virtually any computer without downloading the language fonts.
"Our indigenous state-of-the art technology and content is being made available to customers like Yahoo, MSN. Webdunia runs one of the finest language emails in Indian languages not only in India but the world over," Mr. Karnik added.
The company's software R&D teams have further strengthened the search engine backbone so that users can search in their own language on both Webdunia.com and the World Wide Web.
